What are Your Top 5 "Whodunnit" films ?
Whodunnit is actually a reference to novels, however the transition to the screen is as intriguing as the old-world counterpart.
The greatest thing about the genre is that it gets better all the time. As Americans, we recognize these films as "noir"-ish, gritty and visually dark films with psychologically dark heroes who try to save a world that everyone knows is forgotten.
Short and sweet list of my top 5 Whodunnits:
Touch of Evil
A remix of noir during the late years of its foundation. Orson Welles' contribution to the genre left audiences in shock at the violent action of this 1958 thriller.
Chinatown
A detective in 1930s Los Angeles stumbles onto a mysterious murder involving water. The 1974 reprise of the noir setting after a long departure. Robert Towne wrote a movie for the ages with this classic.
Bladerunner
Futuristic Los Angeles cop investigates a murder committed by a human clone. This 1982 addition is a fantastic presentation and a unique futurist perspective on classic noir that questions greater concepts of humanity.
SE7EN
A 1995 renewal of film noir in an MTV-ruled culture. David Fincher creates a starkly apathetic setting in a familiar city (anywhere, usa) that shares a story with an unforgettable ending.
Sin City
A series of tales based on the graphic novels of Frank Miller. The gritty stories of corruption, redemption and protection of innocence make the city of sin a place that needs its warriors and heroes, even if they are wilted, bitter and on the brink of death at every turn. Of the new millineum, this 2005 addition to the genre is a multi dimensional presentation that carries on the spirit of the traditional film noir style.
Honorable Mention:
Double Indemnity
Maltese Falcon
L.A. Confidential

I can't really think of a top five, been brewing on this one for a while. I was hoping to come up with a majestic list, but I guess I just don't know that much about film. My all-time favorite has got to be Usual Suspects.

Usual Suspects is a great film for this list. And just a great film. The cast as well as the talent behind the camera really put together a great picture.
